(Jesus Redeems Nov.2001)

"I can do all things through CHRIST who strenghthens me"(Phil 4:13)

When the communist Government conquered Romania, it imprisoned many believers and ministers of God. They made these Christians to deny Jesus by their oppression.

Rev. Richard Wumbrand was one among them. He was afflicted because he believed that Jesus Christ is God. For 13 years, he experienced agony in prison not knowing the plight of his wife and children. They kept him in a dark room and made a hole in his body with a heated iron rod. Rarely, they would give him a piece of bread. He bore all this cruelty for he had love and faith in Jesus.

All through these sufferings, he praised God reciting all the known bible verse. He strengthened himself in God and rejoiced in Christ. The communist government became furious when they saw believers still trusting God after this great oppression. Hence, they resolved to do more things that are ruthless oppression. They brainwashed the Christians, who had firm faith and belief, and made them deny Jesus.

Rev. Richard Wumbrand was shocked, when he found many were mentally disturbed after persuasion and were repetitively confessing, “Hail communism, Jesus is not God!” incredibly, these people stood for Jesus in the past. The thought, he carried about Jesus gave him immense strength to stand through these sufferings. He was agitated about the fact that they can displace the thought about Jesus by their severe persuasion. The time came when he was the next prisoner to be brainwashed. He cried to Jesus in his heart and he heard the following verse reverberating, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)

At that moment, he received a new strength and became courageous that no persecution can remove the thought about Jesus. They continued their afflictions for many hours and days, but Rev. Richard Wumbrand praised God and repetitively confessed, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. No kind of persecution employed by them could defeat his faith. Dear readers, are you confused because of the problems that you face ? Fear not, for you too can say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

We consist of these three : body, soul and spirit. In addition, we have struggles by means of these three different things, body, world and Satan.

Our own flesh struggles against our self. Read the writings of Saint Paul who had shared his experience with regard to this problem. “For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate that I do……… it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

For, I know that in me (that is in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:15-21,24)

This is the cry of many people today. All evil things that rise in our own flesh turns out to be our opponent for struggle. You think not to sin, but you do that you do not want to do. You think to live holy but you do the unholy things, which you hate. It is because of the sin that you harbour in your flesh.

You can overcome this struggle against sin through Jesus who strengthens you. Saint Paul has said, “For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2) The man who cried, “who will deliver me” has experienced deliverance from sin through the Holy Spirit. God gives us this same power to overcome sin. Jesus has said, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to me” (Acts 1:8).

This verse clearly says that the anointment of the Holy Spirit gives us strength to overcome flesh.  Hence, give place for the Holy Spirit, to take control over you and receive His anointment. Then you will be holy, to overcome sin that struggles against your flesh.

Jesus has said, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). The sufferings in this world perplex our soul. We are bewildered because we are unable to overcome the troubles and sufferings. Nevertheless, we should not forget that we have all strength to do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Few years back, I received a letter and a review from the author of a Tamil magazine from Chennai. In it, he had badly criticized about my private life and ministry that is not true.

He has written, “What is your opinion about this critique that is going to be published in our magazine?” I was depressed in my soul with the question, “What would the readers think about the ministry and myself?” Immediately the Holy Spirit within me comforted and strengthened me by His word, “Do not be dismayed about this fake news. Blessed are you when they revile against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matt 5:11,12)

I received a new strength from God and did not fear or trouble myself about the review. However, as usual, I replied the letter elucidating that the news is fictitious. Once again, he wrote to me, “We cannot accept your explanation and I am going to release this news”. In addition, he had stated that he was the district secretary of a particular religious terrorist organization.

God counseled me to answer him for the second time and l wrote, “You will not believe the truths about me for you are the district secretary of religious terrorist organization. I am not afraid about the fictitious news that you are going to publish about me. Because Jesus has said, “Blessed are you when they revile against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matt 5:11,12). Therefore, I am happy about your work against me. I know this news will not affect God’s ministry and myself for I stand right before my Lord Jesus. Moreover, I am ready to loose my esteem and respect for Jesus. So go ahead with your task”.

After some days, the same author visited me in Nalumavadi. He said, “I decided to disgrace you by publishing this bad news. The plates got ready for printing and on the next day, to my surprise I found nothing on the plate. It is impossible for a plate to be clean without we doing it so. Therefore, I understood that it is divine and I have come here to know the secret from you.”  He attended the Thirappin Vasal prayer and confessed, “Brother, I have done a mistake, please pray and bless me”. God was gracious to me to repay him with a meal and blessings.

Beloved readers, we have to face this kind of tribulation until we leave this world. You will certainly have sufferings and tribulations in your workspot, family, street, business centre etc., There may be times, where we need to face false accusations and opposition for no reason. Do not get perplexed by these problems. Take the bull by its horn. You will certainly overcome. Jesus will strengthen you to overcome problems. You can also boldly say, “I can do all things (overcome all problems) by Christ who strengthens me”.

Sin struggles with our flesh. The world brings sadness and anguish to our soul. In addition, Satan brings fear and confusion in our spirit. It is true, that we live in a world that has evil spirit, black magic and sorcery. The Bible says that we have struggle against these spirits (Ephesians 6:12) The first weapon the evil spirit uses is fear. That is why God has mentioned the word “Fear not” many times in the Bible.

We can overcome Satan because Jesus who is within us is greater. (I John 4:4). He is the One, who gives you strength to overcome Satan. I know a man of God who went to a village to minister. Few people worked black magic against this man of God for they do not want him to minister in that place.

One day after his sermon, he was reclining on his bed. Suddenly, he woke up and saw an evil spirit standing before to attack him. He did not fear the evil spirit for he had the Holy Ghost within him. He said, “Satan, I am the anointed servant of God and you cannot touch me, go back to the place that you came from.” That is the end; the evil spirit left without turning back. That was power of black magic worked out by them.
Some say with fear, “Satan is encircling me and my house like a roaring lion”. However, he roars like a lion: he is not the true lion. Nevertheless, the true lion is Jesus Christ, the Lion of Judah.

A young lion came against the man of God called Samson. Immediately the Holy Spirit descended on him. He killed the lion as he could kill a lamb. The lion looked like a lamb when the Holy Spirit descended and strengthened Samson.  Even now, many children of God find lamb as lion. Dear people, you too receive the power of the Holy Spirit. Fear not, for you can overcome Satan by Christ who strengthens you. “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). You can also say, I have all strength (to overcome Satan) through Christ who strengthens me.

Dear readers, Say, I have strength I have strength to do all things I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Keep on saying these words repetitively. Everyday morning when you wake up say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me and I am not going to worry about the struggles and problems that I am going to face today.” You will certainly accomplish all things in your life.

My beloved God,
I thank you for you are the One, who gives me strength to overcome flesh, world and Satan,
Fill me with the anointment of the Holy Spirit to overcome all the sin that struggles against my flesh.
Give me your divine strength to overcome all problems that comes my way in this world.
Strengthen me by your Holy Spirit to overcome Satan the enemy.
I believe that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
By faith, I take victory.
In Jesus name I pray... Amen! Amen!
